The most popular hang-out for students during lunch is the newly
designed student-run coffee and smoothie café and student lounge. This
newly established business was suggested by Principal Greg Mulkey and
designed and put together by Stacy Gulseth, educational assistant and
class of ’79 along with students at Marshfield High School.
Students voted on the name of the café last
spring. The business opened on the first day of school in 2010. It is a
business that supports itself. To work in the café, students fill out a
job application, submit their resume and sit down for an interview before
being hired. Five to six students are employed in the café and work before
school and during lunchtime. Students are trained in preparing
cappuccinos, lattes, and Americanos along with blended fresh fruit
smoothies and other chilled drinks. Students learn money skills, customer
service, advertising and sales promotion as well as how to order
merchandise. These valuable skills will help to get students ready for the
real world and to prepare them for careers in business.
In addition to the café, students have a mod and sophisticated eating
lounge brimming with earth tone colors, thrift-store finds and community
donations. This wonderful project would not have been possible without a
generous donation from Oregon First Credit Union whom donated $5,000 worth
of technology equipment.
