CAREER & FAMILY
1971-1974 Seaside High School
Taught Reading & Coached
1974-2005 Marshfield High School
Taught Reading, Career Education, Speech,
Geography, English & P.E. Wayne was raised in Coquille, Oregon along with his sister, Kathleen,
and brother, John, by their parents Wayne and Maxine Van Burger. Wayne
always knew he would be involved in education as a teacher and coach. After college he taught
in Seaside for 3 years, knowing that he wanted to move closer to home.
He was able to achieve
that goal when he was hired by the Coos Bay School District.
Family means a lot to Wayne and he welcomed daughters Wendy ('75) and
Dara ('77) to start the 6th generation of Van Burger's in Coos County.
Wendy played
basketball and Dara was on the cheerleading squad for Springfield High
School. Wayne and Susanne met when she moved to the area to teach in
Bandon. They
married in 1980 and two more Van Burger's joined the family. Ty ('84)
and Lauren ('88). Ty joined dad in the wrestling room achieving several
honors himself: 4 year
state placer (a goal he set for himself). National High School Academic
All American, and Oregon Classic Academic/Wrestling Award Winner, to
name a few. Lauren
also joined dad in the wrestling room to be his mat girl when she wasn't
playing volleyball. She knows her way around a match, critiquing the
moves and points. Wayne retired from teaching in 2003 and from coaching in 2005. Susanne
retired in 2005 after 27 years of teaching. She has and continues to
support him in all his
endeavors. Now, he is working on his second career, Beaver Hill
Productions, making fishing films, hunting films, and corporate films
for local and national companies.
