Charles E. Carlbom is the retired President and Chief
Executive Officer of United Grocers, Inc., a company operating in four
western states. A native of Oregon, he earned a Bachelor of Science in
business administration from the University of Oregon. He attended
Advanced Management courses presented by Stanford and Wharton
University, as well as other post graduate courses over the years. In
June of 1996, Mr. Carlbom was presented an
Honorary Doctorate
of Humane Letters from Portland State University.
Prior to
beginning his business career, Mr. Carlbom spent five years on active
duty in the United States Air Force. Later, he served eighteen years in
the Air Force
Reserve working with the Air Force Academy. Mr. Carlbom holds the rank
of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force, Retired.
In 1962, he joined Willamette Industries where he became Vice President.
Throughout his twenty years with Willamette, he was associated with the
Western Kraft Corporation and accomplished
a number of diverse assignments, including general management and new
business developement.
In 1982, Mr. Carlbom
joined Western Family Foods, Inc. as President
and Chief Executive
Officer of that fine. He retired on January 1, 1997,
when he organized a consulting company, Business Projects
Inc. and continues as Chairman of that Company.
Mr. Carlbom is a member of the
University of Oregon Business Advisory
Council and served on the
Universities Alumni Association board. He served
on the Portland State University
Foundation Board as well as the PSU
Business Advisory Board. He is a
Director of the Oregon Transfer Company, and a Director of the
SEI Investments Company.
He is a member of the Multnomah
Athletic Club, Portland Golf Club, and Arlington Club, where he is a
Past President. He is past Chairman and is an
Emeritus Director of the Good
Samaritan Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees. He presently
serves on the pension advisory board for the Order of
Sisters of Holy Names and is past
President of the Board of Loaves and Fishes Centers, Inc. the
Meals on Wheels Company. Over the years he has served on numerous
private and public company boards as
well as nonprofit
organization boards.
Mr. Carlbom is an avid runner and skier, and he continues
his proficiency
